Halloween 1990’s Horror Watch List! Week 1

To help us all get into the Halloween spirit we asked our loyal listeners and Facebook group members what their go-to horror hits are.  We were frightened by all the awesome suggestions and recommendations, so thank you to all the Duelers that helped us make this list!

I drew the 90’s on this one! According to all of your suggestions in the Facebook group, I think we’re both on the same page – When it comes to Horror in the 90s the hits are just a little more scarce than in the 1980s.  In spite of that, I did not book you an entire month of 1990’s Horror double-features as Mancrush did,  some things may be just too terrifying for the mortal man.

Like Mancrush, I decided to start off our Halloween Horror Watch list on the lighter side to help ease us into the month.  Then over the weekend, we kick-off the first theme of our 90’s watch list, with a Stephen King movie marathon! What a great way begin the month of October!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1 – Ernest Scared Stupid (1991)

To start off the month I went straight to the suggestions of our Facebook group! One of the most reacted to films was this 90’s classic, which was suggested by loyal listener Brian Moreno – Ernest Scared Stupid! It may not be the best Ernest movie but it is not the worst, but can you really go wrong with Ernest? Ernest P. Worrell seemed to do everything in the 80s and ’90s. He went to summer camp, played basketball, went to jail, went to Africa,  joined the Army and even saved Christmas! So why the hell not Halloween! It’s just a shame we did not get more Ernest Holiday Specials! I would have loved to see a Thanksgiving one in the ’90s called Ernest: Totally Stuffed!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2 – Arachnophobia (1990)

Some may debate if this is actually a Horror movie or not. That said, if you are one who suffers from Arachnophobia then there is probably not a more terrifying movie than this. I think half of the fun of watching this movie is watching it with people who are deathly scared of spiders and just watching them squirm while you enjoy the comedic antics of John Goodman! Win-Win in my book Duelers!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3 – Army of Darkness (1992)

There may not be a movie on this list that is more fun than Army of Darkness. Sam Raimi’s instant classic had fans of the Evil Dead series hooked from the opening lines “My name is Ash and I am a slave. Close as I can figure, the year is thirteen hundred A.D and I’m being dragged to my death. It wasn’t always like this, I had a real-life, once. A job”. Army of Darkness seamlessly blends horror, action, and comedy to deliver a film that is worthy of many lists and I felt there was no better way to start of the month of October than with a little “Boom-Stick!”

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4 – Night of the Living Dead (1990)

For the first Friday night in October I had to pick one of my favorite remakes of all time! (and you know how much we hate remakes on the show) Tom Savini’s 1990 remake of the iconic George A. Romero masterpiece Night of The Living Dead.  Savini worked many times with George Romero, and Tom’s career will always be linked to Romero’s in my opinion.  Although many people do not care for this film as much as the original, I always held a special place for this one in my cold black heart. I think it may be due to the Savini treatment that the movie received! Which included updated effects and plot twists while still staying faithful to Romero’s original work. Enjoy this one because they’re coming to get you, Duelers!!!

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5 – The Stand (1994)

M-O-O-N that spells badass movie!  Stephen King’s The Stand is one of my favorite films of the 1990s and it just reeks of it in so many ways from the fashion to the not so hip slang scattered throughout the series that even then seems to be a bit dated.  I remember renting this in college one year and a friend and I binge-watched it in one night while turning it into a musical MST3K style. With its all-star cast containing Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald, and Miguel Ferrer. The script penned by King himself and tells the ultimate story of good vs evil and I think that makes it perfect for this watch list. Yeah, it’s cheesy but that is one of the things I like about this one. After all, this is a made-for-tv miniseries and it won’t be the last one on this list! So I guess I have just one question for you.  Baby, can you dig your man?

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6 – Misery (1990)

We finish off the first week of our watch list just I get started with my Stephen King marathon. It’s Sunday and we have the movie that describes how we all feel after our football team bites the big one. So grab that last 6-pack, some snacks and curl up in bed because its time to watch Misery!

This 1990 classic may have given King his most successful mainstream success.  James Caan and Katy Bates both give such credible performances in this film, it really helps to add to its sense of realism and true to life horror. Consequently, these were the things I always found truly terrifying.

Hope you’ve enjoyed week one! Stop by our Facebook group, and let us know what you thought!
